Sony Hard Disk Recorder
What do you think of Sony’s DCRH28 mini DV recorder?

I’m about to buy one this weekend. How do you compare it to those with hard disk type of memory? How about it’s recording time?

I assume you mean the DCR-HC28? They’re nice camcorders! Recording time’s simple – you get an hour per tape. HD camcorders allow you to record for longer without doing anything, but how difficult can changing a tape be?

HD camcorders are being marketed as the latest in hi-tech gadgets, but MiniDV’s still the best quality, easiest to edit and gives you the best value for money. On the down side, you can only transfer the video to your PC in realtime (i.e. an hour of video will take an hour to transfer) and it uses a lot of disk space (which you get back when you’ve finished editing).

One other thing – you’ll need a firewire card and cable to transfer video to your PC. If you haven’t already got one, they’re cheap, and easy to install!
