Connecting camcorder to computer with Firewire 800?
Hi,
I have the following setup: Sony handycam with a DV port and an Apple MacBook Pro with a Firewire 800 port. I used to use my camera with an older computer that had a Firewire 400 port. I bought a new Firewire cable – 4-pin to 9-pin. The issue is it doesn’t work. The Macbook Pro doesn’t recognize the device. The 4-pin plug fits tightly into the camera which i was not too happy about. Is the DV plug and the 4-pin plug the same thing? and if so do i need to use a specific cable? or are some cameras just not compatible with Firewire 800?
Using a 4-pin (camera side DV port) to 9-pin (Mac-side firewire 800 port) should work – it does with my Sony and Canon miniDV tape based camcorders and Macs…
Since you have done this before with a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable, you already know the
camcorder needs to be in Play/Edit mode
and
the Firewire port needs to be active (System Preferences: Network in some earlier versions of OSX).
The only other thing I can think of at this point (assuming you are plugging into the correct port on the Mac and the camcorder) is to try another firewire cable. I use Belkin and Monster…
