Why does my video camera appear to have low video quality when I upload my video to my pc?
I have a Sony DCR-SR42 which is just a 30gb hard drive camera, The video quality of this camera looks fine on a TV but uploaded on a PC it looks terrible, very noisy/ grainy. Why is this? Also I am looking to upgrade to another camera any suggestions?
If the video is “noisy grainy”, that can be one of three things:
1) The environment has very low light to begin with. The SR 42, like all camcorders in the same $ range up to about $1,000 all have small lenses and imaging chips. Low light behavior is poor. Resolution is to use a video light or just turn on the lights.
2) The camcorder is not capturing video in “high quality” mode. This means it is compressing he video on the fly before storing to the hard drive. The upside is that the record time available is longer. The downside is what you see – poor video quality.
3) Digital zoom is being used. Digital zoom is useless and should be disabled and never used.
There is one more – that the codec and editing application on your computer is not doing a good job. If you are using MovieMaker or the stuff that came in the box with the camcorder from Sony, then stop using that and get something decent – like Sony Vegas…
If you want best available video quality, then miniDV tape is it. But your computer needs firewire for transfer because USB won’t work. If this is not possible, then flash memory – it uses the same file types as HDD cams, but at least the known vibration and altitude issues that HDD cams have will not impact flash memory or miniDV tape.
To resolve the grainy low light issue, you need a camcorder with bigger lenses and imaging chips – but those start at the $2,000 level…
